Real Experiences at Lumia Care: Courtney’s Story from Our Campbelltown Day Program

When you’re looking for a disability day program in Campbelltown, it’s easy to get lost in lists of services and activities.

But what really matters is the experience.

We recently sat down with Courtney, who has been attending Lumia Care’s Day Program in Campbelltown since it first opened, to talk about what it’s actually like.

“I’ve been here since the beginning”

Courtney has been attending Lumia Care’s Campbelltown Day Program almost since it first opened.

“I’ve been coming since it basically opened… maybe two weeks after it started.”

Over the past few years, it’s become a consistent and important part of her routine — not just somewhere to go, but somewhere she belongs.

Finding connection and community

What do you enjoy most about coming here?

“Being able to interact with all different people… different cognitive levels of understanding.”

“And being able to appreciate life through their eyes as well.”

“And just being able to get out into the community… that’s a big thing for me.”

For Courtney, the Campbelltown Day Program isn’t just about activities — it’s about connection, perspective, and being part of something.

“I like to be mentally stimulated”

What have you been enjoying lately?

“I like to be mentally stimulated… that’s a big part of me being here.”

“I’ve been smashing some puzzles lately and having fun while doing so.”

Courtney is open about the fact that while she has physical challenges, staying mentally engaged is really important to her — and something she actively seeks out.

Challenging yourself in new ways

What’s something new you’ve tried since joining?

“For a long time I was the only wheelchair user… so it was about challenging myself to do activities that everyone else is doing.”

“It’s kind of learning to adapt.”

“It’s changing the mindset of ‘I can’t do that’ to ‘how can I be part of it?’”

“It might look different for me, but still being able to do it.”

That shift in mindset — from sitting out to finding a way in — is where confidence starts to grow.

Building confidence over time

Has coming here helped you feel more confident?

“Yes… being more confident in problem solving.”

“And being happy to try… trying things in different ways.”

Rediscovering what brings you joy

What’s something you feel proud of?

“It’s that level of achievement… even if it’s something small.”

“It doesn’t have to be this big thing.”

“Even just setting yourself a goal for the day and ticking it off.”

“Or getting back into things that I enjoyed before… and having the motivation to re-explore what gave me joy.”

For Courtney, success isn’t about big milestones — it’s about momentum.

The importance of feeling heard

What makes a great support worker?

“Active listening… there’s a difference between hearing and listening.”

“Allowing the participant to express themselves… not answering for them or assuming.”

“Most of the time I can’t physically show someone what I need… so listening is massive.”

It’s a simple idea — but a powerful one.

Feeling safe and supported in the community

What’s it like going out into the community with the team?

“I don’t feel stressed going out… because I’ve always got someone in my corner.”

“They’re very considerate and mindful of making my trip accessible.”

“Most of the time I don’t even have to ask… they’re already thinking about it.”

“It’s nice feeling like people are in your corner.”

That sense of safety and support is what allows participants to fully enjoy the experience — not just manage it.

The moments that make it enjoyable

Do you have any favourite memories?

“It’s kind of like a collection of lots of memories.”

“Like a filing cabinet in your mind… each one is different.”

“It’s those little things… inside jokes, playing games, friendly competition.”

“That’s what makes it.”

Thinking about joining a disability day program?

What would you say to someone who’s thinking about joining?

“Just jump in and do it.”

“A lot of people are afraid they’re not going to make connections or enjoy it…”

“But there’s always going to be someone or something that you’re going to enjoy.”

Inclusive, fun, and enjoyable”

If you had to describe the Day Program in three words?

“Inclusive.”
“Fun.”
“Enjoyable.”

“…and maybe a bit of chaos — but the good kind.”

Real experiences at Lumia Care

Courtney’s story highlights something important — disability looks different for everyone.

For her, the journey has been about adjusting to life after an accident, navigating physical challenges, and finding new ways to stay engaged, independent, and connected.

“It might look different… but I can still do it.”

At Lumia Care, that’s exactly what support is designed to do — not define people by their limitations, but support them to live life on their own terms.
