PICC Care and Management
Whether you need PICC care for yourself or a family member, Lumia Care is here to help.
A Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter, also called a PICC line, is a thin tube placed into a vein to help deliver medications, fluids or treatment over a longer period of time.
Managing a PICC line at home can sometimes feel overwhelming. Through our Hospital in the Home (HITH) service, Lumia Care nurses provide safe, supportive care to help keep your PICC line clean, secure and working properly.
Our nurses can support you with dressing changes, flushing the line, checking for signs of infection, and showing you how to care for your PICC line at home. We focus on safe, comfortable care so your treatment can continue with fewer disruptions.

What is a PICC?
A Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) is a thin, flexible tube placed into a vein in the arm.
It allows medications, fluids and other treatments to be given directly into the bloodstream over a longer period of time without repeated needles.
Common Uses for a PICC Line:
✔ Long-term intravenous (IV) antibiotics
✔ Chemotherapy or other medication infusions
✔ Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN)
✔ Frequent blood draws
A PICC line can remain in place for weeks or months, depending on the treatment plan.
How is a PICC Inserted?
A PICC line is usually inserted in a hospital by a trained clinician. The procedure normally takes about one hour.
The process usually involves:
Numbing the area with local anaesthetic
Using ultrasound to guide the catheter into the vein
Threading the catheter through the vein toward the heart
Confirming placement with a specialised X-ray
Once in place, the PICC line is secured with a sterile dressing to protect against infection and accidental dislodgement.
