What Services Can Support at Home Funding Be Used For?

Support at Home funding is designed to cover a wide range of services that help older Australians remain safe, independent, and supported in their own homes. Depending on your approved funding classification and support plan, your budget may be used for services such as:

Domestic Assistance

Help with general cleaning, laundry, shopping and other everyday household tasks.

Home Maintenance

Services to help keep your home and garden safe, accessible and liveable.

Meal Support

Assistance with meal preparation or providing nutritious meals to help you maintain a healthy diet.

Social Support

Help staying connected with your community, culture and social activities.

Transport Assistance

Support getting to medical appointments, shopping trips and daily errands.

Personal Care

Assistance with bathing, dressing, hygiene, mobility and communication.

Nursing Care

Clinical care and treatment delivered by qualified health professionals.

Allied Health and Therapy Services

Support from professionals such as physiotherapists, podiatrists, and occupational therapists.

Respite Support

Short-term care that gives carers a break while ensuring you continue to receive support.

Your provider will work with you to develop a care plan and budget that aligns with your approved services and helps ensure your Support at Home funding is used effectively.

How Your Support at Home Budget Is Created

After completing your aged care assessment through My Aged Care, an assessor works with you to develop a support plan. This plan outlines your goals, the types of services you may need and the level of funding you are approved to receive under the Support at Home program.

If approved, you will receive a Notice of Decision confirming your eligibility and funding classification. The program includes eight classifications, each providing a different level of funding depending on your care needs.

Once funding is allocated, you can choose a registered provider such as Lumia Care to deliver your services. Your provider will then work with you to develop an individualised care plan and budget, ensuring your services align with your approved support plan and funding level.

How Support at Home Funding Tiers Are Allocated

The Support at Home program introduces eight funding classifications, designed to better align with individual care needs and ensure more flexible access to services. These levels offer a range of annual funding amounts, based on your assessed level of support. 

Each classification provides a quarterly care budget, helping you plan and use your services consistently across the year. This new model replaces the former Home Care Package system and simplifies how funds are allocated. 

If you're currently receiving care through a Home Care Package, there's no need to worry, you will automatically be placed into the new Support at Home level that corresponds with your existing funding, so there’s no disruption to your care. 

This approach ensures a smoother transition and gives you more control over how and when your care is delivered.

Client Contribution Costs 

Under the new Support at Home system, you may be asked to contribute toward the services you receive — particularly for supports that help with daily tasks or personal independence. These contributions are means-tested and depend on your income level. 

Participants are generally expected to contribute towards independence and everyday living services, such as assistance with household tasks, personal care, or community access. However, the government continues to fully fund clinical support services, including nursing care and other health-related supports delivered by qualified professionals.

Your contribution amount is determined through an income and assets assessment conducted by Services Australia. This ensures contributions are fair and reflect each person’s financial circumstances.

If you were already on a Home Care Package before 12 September 2024, your Support at Home costs won’t increase. And across all aged care, a lifetime contribution cap of $130,000 ensures fairness and financial protection.
