Disability Pride Month: Celebrating Identity, Inclusion and Achievement

Every July, Disability Pride Month celebrates the strength, diversity and achievements of people with disability. It's a time to recognise disability as a valued part of human diversity, celebrate individual identity and continue building communities where everyone feels respected, included and empowered.

Disability Pride is about more than raising awareness. It's about recognising that every person deserves the opportunity to be themselves, participate in their community and live with dignity.

For Robin, who prefers to be known as Sapphire, Disability Pride is reflected in the everyday moments that make someone feel accepted, supported and free to be themselves.

What is Disability Pride Month?

Disability Pride Month began in the United States in July 1990, following the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)—landmark legislation that strengthened the rights of people with disability and improved access and inclusion.

Today, Disability Pride Month is recognised and celebrated in many countries around the world. While celebrations may look different from place to place, the message remains the same: disability is a natural and valued part of human diversity, and everyone deserves equal opportunity, respect and inclusion.

For many people, Disability Pride means embracing identity, celebrating strengths and challenging the barriers and attitudes that can prevent full participation in everyday life.

The Disability Pride Flag

One of the most recognisable symbols of Disability Pride is the Disability Pride Flag, which celebrates the diversity of the disability community.

Each colour represents different lived experiences:

  • Red – Physical disabilities

  • Gold – Neurodiversity

  • White – Non-visible and undiagnosed disabilities

  • Blue – Emotional and psychiatric disabilities

  • Green – Sensory disabilities

Together, the colours celebrate the diversity of the disability community while acknowledging the barriers many people continue to face. The flag is a reminder that every person's experience is unique and equally valued.

What Disability Pride looks like in everyday life

While Disability Pride is celebrated around the world, its meaning is often found in everyday moments of acceptance, belonging and respect.

For Sapphire, that starts at home.

Living in a Lumia Care Supported Independent Living home has given Sapphire the confidence to express personal identity openly and feel accepted.

One of the things Sapphire values most is feeling able to be authentic.

"Yeah... everyone's supported."

That feeling of support is reflected in the small, everyday interactions that help create a welcoming home.

"I feel accepted... They all say that I do really nice makeup and that I look good. They always give me compliments."

For Sapphire, those compliments aren't simply about makeup. They're a sign of being recognised, respected and encouraged to express personal identity with confidence.

Finding a community where you belong

Feeling accepted at home is important, but belonging also comes from being connected to the wider community.

Each month, Sapphire attends a local peer support group for transgender and gender-diverse people. It's a welcoming community where people with shared lived experiences come together to connect, support one another and build friendships. After each meeting, everyone heads out for dinner together—a simple tradition that has become an important part of feeling connected and included.

Having opportunities to connect with others who understand your experiences can make a meaningful difference to confidence, wellbeing and a sense of belonging.

At Lumia Care, supporting independence also means supporting people to stay connected with the communities, relationships and activities that are important to them.

Feeling safe starts with respect

Feeling safe isn't only about physical spaces. It's also about knowing you're respected, valued and accepted.

For Sapphire, that feeling comes down to something very simple.

"Being respected by people... I'm pretty safe with this stuff. I feel safe."

Those words are a powerful reminder that inclusion isn't only about removing barriers. It's about creating environments where people feel heard, respected and free to be themselves.

Supporting people to live life their way

At Lumia Care, we believe everyone deserves to live with dignity, independence and choice.

For us, person-centred support means more than helping with everyday tasks. It means supporting people to pursue the relationships, communities and experiences that matter most to them.

Sapphire's story reflects what that support can look like—feeling accepted at home, expressing personal identity with confidence, building meaningful connections in the community and feeling respected every step of the way.

This Disability Pride Month, we celebrate Sapphire and every person who reminds us that inclusion begins with respect, grows through community and thrives when everyone is empowered to be themselves.
