What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is an NDIS-funded support for people with disability who require ongoing assistance with daily activities while working toward greater independence.

SIL focuses on the supports you receive, not housing. It provides structured, ongoing assistance that helps build life skills, confidence, and independence in everyday life.

SIL can include support with:

Personal care such as showering, dressing, and grooming
Help with meal preparation and household tasks like cooking and cleaning
Developing independent living skills, including shopping and budgeting
Support to engage in social and community activities
Overnight or 24/7 support where required

SIL funding covers support only — it does not include rent, food, or everyday living expenses. r

Where Can SIL Supports Be Delivered?

SIL supports can be delivered in different living arrangements, depending on what best suits your needs and NDIS plan.

Shared living arrangements

Many people receive SIL in shared home environments, where they live with other NDIS participants and receive shared supports. Support workers assist residents according to an agreed support model, with assistance available across the day and overnight where required.

In your own home

Some people receive SIL while living in their own home, such as a private rental or family home. SIL funding covers the support delivered in the home, not accommodation costs.

Your Place, Your Pace — Shared Living with Lumia Care

In a Lumia Care shared living arrangement, Supported Independent Living is delivered in a shared home environment, with the right balance of independence, connection, and everyday support.

Our trained teams provide support where needed — helping with routines, skill-building, and staying socially connected — while respecting your choices, privacy, and personal space. Each person is supported to live at their own pace, with encouragement and understanding.

Many people tell us it feels less like a service — and more like a place where they belong.

SIL vs Having a Support Worker — What’s the Difference?

Many people wonder whether they need Supported Independent Living, or if regular support worker assistance is enough. While both are NDIS-funded, they are designed for different levels of support need.

SIL is designed for people who need consistent, structured support to live safely at home, while Core Supports are best suited to lighter or more flexible assistance.

Who is Eligible for SIL?

SIL is generally funded for people who require ongoing daily support to live as independently as possible.

Your NDIS planner or support coordinator will assess whether SIL is reasonable and necessary, based on:

Daily and overnight support needs
Functional capacity and safety requirements
Independence goals and living preferences

If SIL is not included in your current NDIS plan, our team can help you explore other support options and plan for future reviews.
