Independence Begins Within: Honour Your Wellbeing This Self-Care Month

When was the last time you did something just for you? In the hustle of appointments, caring responsibilities, and everyday demands, self-care often slips to the bottom of the list. But this Self-Care Month (June 24–July 24), we’re reminded that real independence — the kind that lets us live life on our own terms — starts with looking after ourselves first.

At Lumia Care, we believe caring for yourself isn’t selfish. It’s how you stay strong, connected, and in control — especially if you’re living with a disability, navigating ageing, or caring for someone who is.

What Is Self-Care Month?

Led by the World Health Organization (WHO), Self-Care Month is a global reminder of the power of simple, everyday actions that support our health and wellbeing. It ends on International Self-Care Day, July 24 — a date chosen to reflect the idea that self-care is something we need 24/7.

Self-care doesn’t need to be complicated. It could be a quiet moment to yourself, getting outside for fresh air, eating something nourishing, or simply asking for help when you need it. It’s for everyone — carers, nurses, support workers, and the people they support. In fact, if you’re someone who’s often caring for others, it’s even more important.

Why Self-Care Matters (Especially Now)

Life with a disability or chronic health condition often comes with added planning, appointments, and decisions. For older Australians, maintaining independence while managing changing needs can be overwhelming. Add to that the emotional load — anxiety, isolation, frustration — and it’s no wonder wellbeing can take a hit.

But here’s the truth: you deserve to feel well, supported, and empowered.

According to Lifeline’s self-care guide, consistent self-care can reduce stress, improve mental health, and help people bounce back after tough times. The WHO also notes that self-care — when supported properly — can help manage chronic conditions, promote autonomy, and reduce avoidable hospital visits.

It’s not just about physical health. Self-care can protect your emotional and mental wellbeing too — something we often overlook.

What Self-Care Really Looks Like

Forget the candles and cucumber slices for a second. Real self-care is personal. It’s what makes you feel steady, safe, and heard. It might be:

  • Setting a daily routine that works for your energy levels

  • Saying “no” to something that feels overwhelming

  • Talking to your GP about something you’ve been putting off

  • Using a mobility aid or support worker without guilt

  • Having a regular catch-up with someone who makes you feel seen

And sometimes, self-care is just pausing. You don’t have to earn rest. You just have to recognise when you need it.

As Canberra Allied Health explains, self-care doesn’t need to take hours. It’s about the small habits you build into your daily life — things that protect your health and bring you joy, even in a tough season.

You Don’t Have to Do It Alone

At Lumia Care, we support you to live life your way. That means backing your independence and reminding you that it's okay to ask for help when you need it. Whether you’re an NDIS participant learning how to better manage your day-to-day, or an older adult who wants to stay at home longer — we’re here for it.

Our team includes qualified nurses, disability support workers, and allied health professionals who genuinely care. We’re not here to take over — we’re here to walk beside you and help you feel empowered, not overwhelmed.

Because real care includes helping you care for yourself too.

This July 24, Start With One Small Step

On International Self-Care Day, you don’t need to overhaul your life. Maybe you:

  • Make time for your favourite meal

  • Write down three things you need this week

  • Take a quiet walk or simply sit in the sun

  • Call someone who lifts your spirits

  • Ask for the help you’ve been putting off

Whatever it is — let it be your moment.

You’re not a burden. You’re not being dramatic. You’re a human being who deserves to be cared for — including by yourself.

Self-care isn’t a luxury. It’s the groundwork for living life with meaning, control, and dignity — and at Lumia Care, that’s what we’re all about.

This month, and every month, let’s honour that truth together.
