Real Journeys: Supported Independent Living and NDIS Day Programs in Sydney
Independence looks different for everyone.
For some, it’s having their own space.
For others, it’s routine, connection and trusted support.
At Lumia Care, we provide Supported Independent Living (SIL) supports in shared accommodation and in participants’ own homes, as well as a specialist NDIS Day Program in Campbelltown, Sydney.
Recently, we asked a few participants what their experience has been like.
Tom’s Journey: Home, Independence and His Three Dogs
Tom has been supported by Lumia Care for around 12 months.
“How long have you been with us?”
“Probably about 12 months.”
Tom lives in one of our shared Supported Independent Living (SIL) houses in Sydney, where he receives daily NDIS-funded support.
“How does living in your SIL home help with day-to-day life?”
“Good.”
Tom enjoys independent living and having his own space. One of the most important things to him is being able to have his three dogs live with him — something that gives him comfort and a true sense of home.
He also attends our NDIS Day Program in Campbelltown, Western Sydney.
“Do you enjoy the Day Program and the outings?”
“Yes.”
“Do you find everyone pretty good there?”
“Yes.”
For Tom, independence isn’t complicated. It’s living somewhere he feels comfortable, keeping his dogs with him, and being part of a routine that includes community outings and familiar support workers.
Sarah’s Journey: Three Years of Stability
Sarah has been supported by Lumia Care for more than three years.
“How long have you been with us?”
“Three years.”
Sarah lives in one of our shared SIL homes, alongside other residents, receiving daily disability support tailored to her needs.
“Do you like your support workers and your one-on-one visits?”
She smiled and said:
“I love my support visit on Monday.”
That regular Monday visit has become part of her routine — something steady and reassuring.
For Sarah, Supported Independent Living isn’t just accommodation. It’s living with others, having familiar support workers, and knowing who will be there each week.
Three years reflects more than service delivery — it reflects trust and continuity.

Disability support isn’t about big promises.
It’s about everyday life — gardening, shared meals, outings, routine visits and familiar faces.
Tom’s independence means living with his dogs.
Sarah’s independence means her Monday support visit.
Every journey is different.
And it’s built quietly, consistently — together.
